Growing Goodness, Building Community

Cultivating Kindness

Right behind the TBU warehouse and kitchen is a picturesque 750sq metre urban farm, a dedicated space where people come together to share skills and grow fresh produce from composted kitchen scraps and rescued food. The formerly overgrown and disused Vic Track land has been lovingly rejuvenated by our crew of green thumbed volunteers into a high production urban farm in the heart of Brunswick.

Closed Loop Economy

The Urban Farm is a closed loop system where organic waste from the kitchen is composted on site to fill garden wicking beds that grow fresh vegetables used in our cooking. The garden beds and orchard are fed by a water catchment system hooked up to the factory roof with the whole site powered by 97 solar panels with Tesla battery storage. TBU’s Urban Farm makes MG’S kitchen one of the most sustainable virtually off grid commercial kitchen in Australia.

Future Projects

The pandemic taught us a lot about the precarious nature of food security when people hoarded food and we received little rescued food with which to continue feeding our community. For the first time in our operations we had to buy a large quantity of food which is an expense TBU cannot sustain. In response we decided to be more self sufficient and to grow our own food. The next phase of development in the farm includes as mushroom growing laboratory, bee hives and egg laying chickens.

Mushroom Lab

A laboratory dedicated to cultivating mushrooms is on the horizon.

Bees and Chickens

Bee hives and egg laying chickens to come.
