Ramesh is 18 and has been on the streets for 12 years- since he was 6.

I can remember no greater joy than when I saw the smile on Ramesh’s face when he put on a clean new shirt.

He couldn’t stop looking at himself — fixing the shirt, adjusting the collar. He was taking pride in himself, for what could have been the first time.

The Big Umbrella believes that some new clean clothes can produce a fresh new look on the world and bring a sense of self worth, pride becoming secure and confident again in life.
We all know this to be true, when we buy a new pair of shoes or a new jacket… its picks us up and gives us a sense of worth as we are walking down the street. Now imagine that feeling when, for the first time in your life, you are wearing something of your very own, when all you have ever had is old, discarded dirty clothes.

The Big Umbrella will arrange to pick-up any used clothing you my have and are wishing to donate. We have venues in and around Melbourne where you can drop off your used clean clothes at you convenience. In the near future, drop boxes will be installed around Melbourne and interstate.

We are planning a major school drive for used clothes as children’s clothing is the major size we are trying to source .

Working with a major freight company, all clothing is shipped to Kathmandu, to be given to Monica’s House, a drop-in centre for homeless kids in Kathmandu, and to The Big Umbrella Home, providing new warm clothes for the children of the street who are ready to want nothing more than to get back on their feet, rise above the poverty and integrate back into society.

We are also working with Les Twentyman from the 20thman fund and we hope to bring a little relief from the harsh Melbourne winters to some of the homeless youth. This humble gift will increase the children’s confidence and increase their chances of success in all areas of their lives; socially, educationally and, most importantly, improve their outlook on life.

We are currently seeking sponsorship for this initiative.
